Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde

In 1895, Oscar Wilde went from celebrated playwright to prisoner in a matter of months. Drawing on trial transcripts, letters, newspaper accounts, and Wilde’s own writings, Moisés Kaufman’s play follows the libel suit and two criminal trials that brought about his downfall. Part courtroom drama and part Greek tragedy, it explores the complexity of Wilde himself and the unresolved relationship between societal norms and individual freedom.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

Two minor characters from Hamlet take centre stage in Tom Stoppard’s black comedy. Shakespeare’s story meets the absurdist spirit of Waiting for Godot as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern try to make sense of events beyond their control. The comedy serves a deeper purpose: beneath the verbal dexterity and philosophical fireworks are questions about the meaning of life, with no easy answers.
